Obtaining

Memoirs: Beginner's Luck can be obtained at Avid Horizon, Irem, Abbey Rock, the Isle of Cats, or The Uttershroom if you do not already possess it.

Usage

Memoirs: Beginner's Luck functions as a marker signaling that the player has already received their guaranteed, once-per-captain "something pleasant". Each of the ports listed above has an option which requires that you do not have Memoirs: Beginner's Luck; selecting this option gets you a bundle of miscellaneous goods and 1x Memoirs: Beginner's Luck. This locks the option just chosen as well as the corresponding options at the other ports. In most cases the Beginner's Luck rewards are partially random, a 50/50 chance of two different outcomes.

Hold Capacity

Using the Beginner's Luck option at various ports requires this much space in your hold:

• Irem: 0
• Abbey Rock: 0 or 10
• Avid Horizon: 4 or 9
• Uttershroom: 5 or 5
• Port Cavendish: 1

Strategies

The highest monetary value of reward is usually Avid Horizon, provided you have accepted the Neathbow commission for The First Curator. This has a 50% chance to acquire the Eyeless Skull quite early, exchangeable for a much needed Captivating Treasure; the Hunter's Eye can be bought at the same location for another page of the Neathbow and second Treasure, making this a very rewarding trip. This also provides a Mirrorcatch Box. However, there is a 50% chance of receiving neither of those, only 3 caskets of sapphires, fuel, and supplies.

A close second, and more reliable, is Irem; this always rewards a Searing Enigma and small stat boosts. Enigmas are required for a number of objectives, and sell for 1000 echos at The University if those are not needed. However, without aggressive early exploration, it might come late enough in the game to be unhelpful.

The probable worst place is Port Cavendish at the Isle of Cats, as you can acquire all of the same benefits plus more at other locations. However, Port Cavendish does not have a 'rare' option, which makes it more reliable if you really, really want a Mirrorcatch Box.

The Abbey Rock option is modest but always provides material the Dark-Spectacled Admiral is interested in, either Strategic Information and a large cache of supplies and fuel or a Revelatory Chart and some other items. The Uttershroom's option provides an Extraordinary Implication, and either 5 Stygian Ivory and an Outlandish Artefact or 5 Supplies and 3 Solacefruit.
